1. Add your video. Choose a file or drop it in the box. It stays on your device: the work happens in your browser.
2. Cut what you do not need. Drag the two handles under the picture, or type the start and end time. Only the part between them is kept, so a 5 minute video can become the 40 seconds that matter.
3. Pick what you need. Tap WhatsApp to aim for 16 MB, Email for 25 MB, or choose Smallest file. You can also type your own size in megabytes.
4. Compress and check. Press the button, watch the progress, then compare the original and the result with the slider before you download or share.

WhatsApp accepts videos up to about 16 MB, and email usually stops at 25 MB. A phone records around 17 megabits per second for 1080p video, so one minute is roughly 130 MB. Getting that into 16 MB needs the video to shrink by a factor of ten or more, which is where good compression matters.

The tool works out how many bits it can spend on every second of picture, picks a sensible picture size for that budget (a clean 480p looks better than a blocky 1080p), and then spends the bits where the picture needs them. Busy scenes get more, calm scenes get less, so the quality looks even from start to finish.

4. Comprime y comprueba. Pulsa el botón, mira el progreso y compara el original con el resultado con el deslizador antes de descargar o compartir.

WhatsApp acepta vídeos de hasta unos 16 MB y el correo suele parar en 25 MB. Un móvil graba unos 17 megabits por segundo en 1080p, así que un minuto pesa unos 130 MB. Para meterlo en 16 MB el vídeo tiene que encoger diez veces o más, y ahí es donde importa una buena compresión.

La herramienta calcula cuántos bits puede gastar en cada segundo de imagen, elige un tamaño de imagen sensato para ese presupuesto (un 480p limpio se ve mejor que un 1080p lleno de bloques) y reparte los bits donde la imagen los necesita. Las escenas movidas reciben más y las tranquilas menos, así que la calidad se ve pareja de principio a fin.

Three things decide the size of a video: how many pixels each picture has, how many pictures there are per second, and how cleverly they are packed. The tool lets you tune all three.

• Picture size. A phone screen is small. 720p is plenty for sharing, and 480p still looks fine on a phone. Halving the width and height cuts the pixels to a quarter.
• Frames per second. 30 is smooth, 24 looks like cinema, and 15 is fine for talking heads and slideshows. Fewer frames mean fewer bits.
• Compression effort. The encoder inside the page is x264, the same open-source H.264 engine behind many professional tools. At the same file size it keeps more detail than the encoder built into most browsers. More effort means a slower job and a smaller or sharper result.

With two passes the first pass studies the whole video and the second spends the bits wisely, so the file lands close to the size you asked for. A third or fourth pass only runs when the result is not yet close enough. If you care more about quality than size, move the quality slider instead of fixing a size.

The tool never changes your original file. If a result is not smaller than the original, it says so, and you can keep what you had.

Tres cosas deciden el peso de un vídeo: cuántos píxeles tiene cada imagen, cuántas imágenes hay por segundo y lo bien empaquetadas que están. La herramienta te deja ajustar las tres.

• Tamaño de imagen. La pantalla de un móvil es pequeña. 720p sobra para compartir y 480p aún se ve bien en un móvil. Reducir a la mitad el ancho y el alto deja los píxeles en una cuarta parte.
• Fotogramas por segundo. 30 es fluido, 24 parece cine y 15 sirve para personas hablando y presentaciones. Menos fotogramas son menos bits.
• Esfuerzo de compresión. El codificador de la página es x264, el mismo motor H.264 de código abierto que usan muchas herramientas profesionales. Con el mismo peso conserva más detalle que el codificador integrado en la mayoría de navegadores. Más esfuerzo significa un trabajo más lento y un resultado más pequeño o más nítido.

Con dos pasadas, la primera estudia todo el vídeo y la segunda reparte bien los bits, así que el archivo queda cerca del peso que pediste. Una tercera o cuarta pasada solo se ejecuta cuando el resultado aún no está lo bastante cerca. Si te importa más la calidad que el peso, mueve el control de calidad en vez de fijar un peso.

La herramienta nunca cambia tu archivo original. Si un resultado no es más pequeño que el original, lo dice y puedes quedarte con lo que tenías.

The big picture above the controls is not a thumbnail: it is the actual video frame, drawn exactly the way the result will be. Play it, scrub through it and watch what you are doing.

• Cut. Move the start and end handles, or play the video and press Start here and End here at the right moments.
• Rotate and flip. Phone videos sometimes come out sideways. Rotate by quarter turns or mirror the picture, and the preview follows instantly.
• Crop. Choose a shape (1:1 for a square post, 9:16 for stories and status, 16:9 for wide, 4:5 for portrait posts, or free). Then drag the box to the best place and drag its corners to make it larger or smaller. Switch to Result preview to see the final framing at full size.

Cropping also saves space, because the part you cut away is not encoded at all. A vertical 9:16 crop of a wide video is a quick way to turn a clip into a story.

• Cortar. Mueve los tiradores de inicio y fin, o reproduce el vídeo y pulsa Empezar aquí y Terminar aquí en el momento justo.
• Girar y voltear. A veces los vídeos del móvil salen de lado. Gira en cuartos de vuelta o refleja la imagen y la vista previa lo sigue al instante.
• Recortar. Elige una forma (1:1 para una publicación cuadrada, 9:16 para historias y estados, 16:9 para panorámico, 4:5 para publicaciones verticales, o libre). Después arrastra el recuadro al mejor sitio y arrastra las esquinas para hacerlo mayor o menor. Cambia a Vista del resultado para ver el encuadre final a tamaño completo.

Recortar también ahorra espacio, porque la parte que quitas no se codifica. Un recorte vertical 9:16 de un vídeo panorámico es una forma rápida de convertir un clip en una historia.

Compressing a video is heavy work. Websites that do it on a server make you upload the whole file first, wait in a queue and download the result. Here the work happens on your own computer or phone, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue. The price is that your device does the effort.

The tool splits the video into parts and compresses them at the same time on several processor cores, so a modern laptop manages a 5 minute video in a few minutes with the recommended settings. A phone is slower. The Quick setting is the fastest of the high-quality options, Maximum is the slowest. The browser encoder option is the quickest of all, but its files are noticeably bigger for the same picture quality.

Keep the tab open while it works. If you leave it, some browsers slow the job down to save battery.

Comprimir un vídeo es un trabajo pesado. Las webs que lo hacen en un servidor te obligan a subir primero todo el archivo, esperar en una cola y descargar el resultado. Aquí el trabajo ocurre en tu propio ordenador o móvil, así que no se sube nada y no hay cola. El precio es que el esfuerzo lo hace tu dispositivo.

La herramienta divide el vídeo en partes y las comprime a la vez en varios núcleos del procesador, así que un portátil moderno resuelve un vídeo de 5 minutos en unos minutos con los ajustes recomendados. Un móvil es más lento. El ajuste Rápido es el más veloz de las opciones de alta calidad y Máximo el más lento. La opción del codificador del navegador es la más rápida de todas, pero sus archivos pesan bastante más para la misma calidad de imagen.

Mantén abierta la pestaña mientras trabaja. Si la dejas, algunos navegadores ralentizan el trabajo para ahorrar batería.

You can open MP4, MOV (iPhone and Android camera files), WebM and MKV videos that use H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1, as long as your browser can play the codec. The result is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound by default, which plays on every phone, TV, computer and in WhatsApp. WebM with VP9 is available for the web and VLC.

iPhones record in H.265 by default. Chrome on Windows may not be able to read H.265 without the system extension, in which case the tool tells you. Safari, Edge with the HEVC extension and most phones can.

Puedes abrir vídeos MP4, MOV (archivos de cámara de iPhone y Android), WebM y MKV que usen H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9 o AV1, siempre que tu navegador pueda reproducir el códec. Los iPhone graban en H.265 por defecto. Chrome en Windows puede no poder leer H.265 sin la extensión del sistema, y en ese caso la herramienta te lo dice. Safari, Edge con la extensión HEVC y la mayoría de móviles sí pueden.
